April 9th 2025

Our numbers were down this week, with apologies from Alison Bacon, Eric Smith, Brian Fitzpatrick, Mick Costello, Jenny Sanderson, Geoff Adcock, Kylie Rowbottom, Barb Leane, Rita O’Brien, Ron Payne and John Pearce.

We were joined again by visiting Rotarian Ben Hill along with guest speakers in 4 students from Bendigo Senior Secondary College who attended NYSF in Canberra and Brisbane.

GP gave a brief report on the Earthquake in Burma/Myanma and told us how the death toll is steadily rising and of the many people that are still missing.  Her immediate family are OK, but many others were not so lucky.

Our guest speakers gave an enthusiastic presentation on NYSF (National Youth Science Forum) each saying how fantastic the experience was. The organisation of the event was great as previous attendees came back to act as leaders for this year’s forum. Darcy explained that he was the only male in the Bendigo Senior Secondary College representation of 9 students, the numbers at the forum balanced out.  He is on a mission to encourage more males from Bendigo to apply for next year.

Each of the attendees spoke of how they arrived at the forum with a defined ideas of what they wanted to do in the future. They all came away with a much broader objective simply because of learning of the many different facets available.  All of the students thanked Lynne Cooper for the outstanding support and assistance that she has given to them.

I reported that Mick and I have attended President Elect Training in Bendigo on the weekend.  So, the club can expect a higher level of professionalism than we usually give. (Good luck with that)

GP reminded us of the invitation to join the Karen Community at the Water Festival this weekend.  Numbers are required for catering purposes so please let GP know if you will be attending.  I encouraged all members to attend as it is a wonderful experience.

VALE - Pierce John Grenfell PHF
It is noted with great sadness the passing of Mr. Pierce John Grenfell, PHF.
Past President and Charter Member of the Rotary Club of Eaglehawk.

Pierce (or Mr. Grenfell to so many of us who grew up in Eaglehawk) was a Charter Member of the the Rotary Club of Eaglehawk, serving as the club's President in 1969/1970, a former Councillor and Mayor of the Borough of Eaglehawk, a returned serviceman, long standing business owner, trading as Grenfell's Butchers in both Eaglehawk's CBD and in California Gully.  Pierce was renowned throughout the area for his involvement in the Eaglehawk Citizens Brass Band, his tireless work within the community and in his later years, for his daily walks around Lake Neangar.  Pierce's 100th birthday last year was testament to how highly he was regarded with an endless stream of messages of congratulations from throughout the community.

We extend our sincere sympathy to Pierce's family and friends.
