Meeting notes provided by Geoff Adcock -

Acting President Geoff Gallagher read the Ode of Remembrance at the commencement of the meeting.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn,
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember them.

This passage is taken from the poem “For the Fallen” by Lawrence Binyon.

Apologies
Alison Bacon, Kylie Campbell, Mick Costello, Gary Frank, GP, Barbara Leane and Karen Armstrong.

Program
Jenny Sanderson introduced her son Matthew Richardson as our guest speaker, telling us that he had wanted to join the army since he was around nine years of age.

Matt attended Eaglehawk North Primary School, and Eaglehawk Secondary College, before attending Bendigo Senior Secondary.

Matt enlisted in the army at the age of 19.  He was posted to Adelaide at the RAAF base where he developed an insight into the Air Force whilst in the army.

In 2016 and 17 he was posted to Afghanistan where he spent seven months. One of his roles was as a guardian angel working in the SUV section which involved him escorting various dignitaries.  He was also involved in working with members of the Afghan army.

After 4 1/2 years in the army, he was discharged.  After some time in civilian life when in 2022 Russia invaded the Ukrainian president Zelenskyy formed the international Legion to enable foreigners to join the fight against the Russians.

Matt decided to join the group if possible.  It was necessary for him to try and gather as much equipment as he could.  He was then involved in travelling to Warsaw, Poland from where he was able to cross into the Ukrainian to join the International Legion.  This involved some serious discussion with the Ukrainians before he eventually joined the Legion.

Matt was involved in a number of actions and skirmishes, one which involved around 70 Russian soldiers and two tanks. He had some time in Kyiv for rest and recreation. Later he was injured and as a result he lost a finger, and the post-surgery was very difficult.  It was necessary to barter for sheets and other items to assist his recovery.

His experience of the medical system and treatment encouraged him to return to Australia.

After Matt completed his address, The Ode was read followed by Ken Wellard playing the Last Post with a minute's silence followed by the Reveille (or Rouse)

A note from President Alison -

My apologies for having missed the last couple of meetings - but as some of you may be aware, I am back at work with the AEC training the staff for the forthcoming election. This has been more extensive than I originally anticipated, unfortunately I will again be an apology this coming week.

Many thanks to Eric and Geoff Gallagher who have both stepped in to ensure meetings are organised and to John Gurr for his 'treasurer' duties in my absence.

I look forward to my return to meetings on Wednesday 7th May, when we will be hosting the Rotary Club of Castlemaine.
Club News and Updates
Anzac Day 2025
Well done to the band of workers from our club who again braved the very early morning and had the bbq all fired up and sizzling away for the Gunfire Breakfast.  The crowds around the cenotaph were the largest seen for many many years (some even say the biggest ever!).  This meant that the queue for the famous breakfasts was quite long, but as usual the excellent organisation of both our club and the Lions Club enabled a very organised and efficient service of food and everyone was happy.

A few photos from both the dawn service and then the service at 8.30am -

Lynne Cooper reports -
Back Packs 4 Vic Kids will use good second hand appropriate books for little takkers thru to teenagers. Rita from our club bookshop allowed me to raid her supply this week. I have chosen about 50 books and am sorting and cleaning them ready to pass on to Colleen for Dot to collect sometime soon. Many thanks Rita - these are all wonderful books for kids in need.

Youth News - National Youth Science Forum (NYSF)
The following report was received from Heidi Tustain, who recently spoke at our meeting on her experience at the National Youth Science Forum.

It was great to see you last week, and thanks again for inviting us, we all had a great time.
I'm so sorry it has taken me so long to get this summary written for you, it's been a big week, but it's all done now:

The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) is a nine-day program that runs in January for Year 12 students. There are two sessions, one in Canberra (where students stay at the Australian National University), and one in Brisbane (where students stay at the University of Queensland). Nine students from Bendigo Senior Secondary College were selected to participate in this program, where we had the opportunity to see and experience a range of STEM-related facilities from university labs to government research labs to large-scale facilities like Snowy Hydro. These experiences included facility tours, lectures, and education on current research and career pathways. Some of the highlights for us were the relationships we built, the experts we met and learned from, and the hands-on activities we got to try.

In our cohorts, we were split into various groups and assigned a buddy. One of the groups was our ‘constellation groups’, named after constellations, which were the groups that we were with for our STEM visits. The other type of group we were in was our floor groups, which were the people whose rooms were near ours, and the people that we caught up with every night. Between these and the wide range of activities we participated in with these people, we all found it easy to meet like-minded people and form friendships that last.
Something that was new to the program this year was the random grouping for our STEM visits. In previous years students were grouped together according to their interests, and their program would be built around that. This year instead, we were put into groups randomly and got to see and try things from a wide range of different fields of STEM. This helped us broaden our horizons and get a sense of what we do and don’t like.

Now that the program has ended, our connection to the NYSF doesn’t end. As alumni, we get the option to apply for the Student Staff Leadership Program, a volunteering opportunity for participants to come back as leaders for the next year’s students (which 3 BSSC students did this year). NYSF also has non-residential programs in the mid-year school holidays in more cities called STEM hubs, which are open to students in years 10-12 and are a great opportunity for future applicants to get a sense of what the Year 12 program is like, and a
chance for the Year 12s to catch up with their NYSF friends again.

Bendigo Senior, the combined Rotary clubs of Bendigo, and the Rotary Club of Balwyn and our families, some of us would never have had the chance to be part of this amazing program.

Kind regards,
Heidi Tustain
